Bowen therapy is very powerful treatment for pain, injury and a number of illnesses. However, I have found in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, that it works best with the Aqua Hydration Formulas and some other therapies written about on other pages. While some improvement in Parkinson's disease symptoms can be obtained by using only Bowen therapy, the results are generally slow and unsatisfying. Using the hydration effect of Aqua Hydration Formulas, plus the hydrating and balancing effect of Bowen therapy is very powerful medicine indeed.
All those who have come to me with Parkinson's disease and persisted with this therapy have made great steps forward in returning to health.
Any Bowen therapist treating a patient with Parkinson’s disease needs to remember that the pain and stiffness displayed by their patient is neurological in origin – not physical. Therefore, the therapy needs to be gentle and balancing, despite the often asymmetrical nature of the symptoms displayed. Treatment which is too firm or asymmetrical in approach can be detrimental to your patient’s progress as well as causing unnecessary pain.
The timing of treatments is important also. Many therapists try to see their Parkinson’s disease patients frequently in the hope of gaining significant result within a short period. My experience indicates that this is a false hope. Occasionally, I see patients weekly in order to help them over a difficult patch – for instance, when they are reducing medication or experiencing extra stress in their lives. Generally, however, I find that treatments each two weeks work well.
Remember, RECOVERING FROM PARKINSON’S DISEASE TAKES AT LEAST TWO YEARS OR MORE.
It is very important to establish a supportive, comforting relationship with your patient/therapist so you can both enjoy and learn from this exciting, challenging journey.
Treating a person suffering from any neuro-degenerative disorder using Bowen therapy can open the way to freeing them from many inhibiting issues from the past. Counseling and/or Flower Essences are often wonderful accompaniments to this work and, if you do not have, or your therapist does not have experience in any form of counseling, it will be useful to network with therapists who are prepared to join you on this adventure.
